SUBJECT: Exhaust Backfire
DATE: Sep. 2, 1994
NOTE: THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 3.9L ENGINE AND
MANUAL TRANSMISSION.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Exhaust backfire or popping sound in the exhaust system during a closed
throttle deceleration before the engine has reached normal operating
temperature.
DIAGNOSIS:
Using the Mopar Diagnostic System (MDS) or the Scan Tool (DRB II or III),
verify that all engine/transmission systems are functioning as designed. If
Diagnostic Troubles Codes (DTC's) are present, record them on the repair
order for future reference, and repair as necessary.
Allow the vehicle engine to cool down for at least six to eight hours.
Start the engine and accelerate in first gear until the engine speed reaches
approximately 3,000 RPM's.
Remove foot from the accelerator pedal. Decelerate the vehicle and allow the
vehicle to come to a stop.
If a backfire or popping sound is heard from the exhaust system, perform the
repair procedure below.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves the replacement of the Powertrain Control Module
(PCM).
Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Replace the PCM.
Connect the negative battery cable.
NOTE: THE FOLLOWING STEP IS REQUIRED BY LAW.
Type the necessary information on the Authorization Modification Label, and
attach the label near the VECI Label. (See Illustration)
