In my case, I installed it to cool the motor down a little bit
which was all it took to eliminate the pinging that was introduced
by the MP PCM. There are a lot of variables here - its true that
in theory, the hotter your burn, the more power the motor can
make, but a clean, cooler burn will definitely make more power than
a hot burn with preignition. A cooler thermostat can also help
to make power by cooling the entire engine down which can reduce
the amount of heat transfer to the incoming air charge prior to
ignition. Its basically a balancing act; wether a particular
thermostat will increase or decrease power can vary from engine
to engine. Since its a pretty inexpensive part, and easy to
swap out on most engines, its a fairly popular item to experiment
with.
