Are you using the official nvidia drivers, or the XFree86 'nv' driver?
The nv driver doesn't do 3D, so you have to use the nvidia ones if you
want to play quake3. They are available to download from nvidia's
site. It's a fairly simple install, you just run the program they
give you, and tweak your X config file a little bit.
