RE: Extended warranty

Two of the most popular aftermarket warranty companies that I see at the
dealership (and honored by other shops as well):

(1) First Extended
(2) North American

Check with your dealership on discounts that they may get with these two
companies. While regular maintenance items will not be covered (including
belts/hoses/brakes/tires), they seem to cover just about most everything
else.

This was about 5 years ago, and I don't know if some things have changed
since then.

3rd-party warranties are more like insurance than a true warranty.
Usually you pay for the service, then submit a claim back to the warranty
company. As Mike said, it's a minefield out there - there are a LOT of
traps, "gotchas" and other things to watch out for.

These companies aren't infallible, either - like any other business, they
can go bankrupt. Ask the DOC about Warranty Gold, but wear your Nomex
underwear when you do - WG went belly-up and left a LOT of customers asking
"ok, so now what happens with this warranty I bought
6 months ago for $1500?"

An extended warranty directly through DaimlerChrysler may be more expensive,
but factor in the risks and headaches of using a 3rd party and it is
probably the better way to go.
