Yes, the 6th digit refers to the "series". On the '89-91 trucks,
this was actually used to convey some useful info; it could be any
of the following:
0 = 100
1 = 150 or economy (E) on Dakota
2 = 250 or low (L) on Dakota
3 = 350 or medium (M) on Dakota
4 = High (H) on Dakota
5 = Premium (P) on Dakota
6 = Sport (S)
7 = Special (X)
9 = Shelby
However, on the '92-96 models, it appears to have been limited to
simply:
1 = S (E)
2 = Dakota, Dakota Sport, Dakota SLT (AKA: Base (L))
So it looks like the 6th digit does little more than tell us
its a Dakota. A bit redundant since the 5th digit is the
vehicle line and already does that... I have no idea what
the "S (E)" means...
As far as the club cab part goes, that's in the next (7th) digit
where the choices are:
1 = Wagon
2 = Club Cab or Sport Utility
3 = Club Cab
4 = Regular Cab
6 = Regular Cab
7 = Sport Utility 2dr or Step Van
8 = Front Section
9 = Open Body
A = Quad Cab
I think you probably already knew that, but somebody else reading
this might not, so figured I'd include it for completeness. :-)
BTW, for anyone who might be interested, a (more or less) full
