hey DMLers,

I could use a little help on this one please.........

i have a vibration at 65 to 85 MPH coming from under truck towards the rear. you can
feel it on the floor boards near the rear seats. its an extended cab truck with the
2-piece ( 3 u-joints ) driveshaft.

I eliminated the engine, tranny, brake drums, wheels and tires as a possible cause. so i
am left with driveline and rear gears and axle.

problem started to occur about 6 months ago when I had my 46RH tranny replaced with a
remanufactured one. also at the same time the u-joints were replaced by the same repair
shop. AND the motor mounts were replaced because my mounts were broken.

i took it back to the shop and they put shims under the tranny mount to correct the
driveline angles. but all that did was to change when the vibration occurs. they
recently removed the shims due to a fan/radiator interference problem that appeared with
those shims installed. They measured like 5/8" .

i took it a "driveline specialist" and he examined it. he said the driveshaft itself was
physically ok from what he could tell. and the u-joints look great. he thought that
perhaps i should drop the shaft and bring it by his shop so he can balance it and check
for run-out for $120. is this a good idea? sounds to me like he just wants some
business.

what things should i be checking for now?

how can you tell if the driveshaft center support needs to replaced?

is there a maximum angle that the driveshaft can pass thru the center support? i thought
i read somewhere that most ctr. support bearings allow a max of 3 degrees.

how can you tell if the pinion bearings are worn? is there supposed to be ANY play in
the rear yoke when you push/pull or move side-to-side?

should i get rear gear backlash checked?

ps. I really do appreciate any info.
