I wouldn't be in 5th gear or overdrive at all while towing a heavy load like
that. I would stay in 4th and deal with the higher rpms if I were forced to
take it on the highway. You'll want to drive a little slower, but I would
drive slower anyway with that load. Just something to consider for next
time.

Well it only bothered the engine while in 5th gear trying to accelerate to
pass traffic, still not too bad. The worst was either the recent road
construction or the weight being right over the rear axle. A 350 Olds
weighs about 500 pounds and all that weight in one spot might have caused
the truck to feel funny, but it really might have been the road. I would go
over spots for miles where I was just about ready to pull off and check my
tires then it would smooth out. After the second time it smoothed out I
realized it was crappy half finished road work.
