That seems like an excessive amount of play to me. Some movement should be
okay, but 5mm is enough to where you might have timing issues.

When I last changed the cap/rotor on my little V6, there was virtually no
movement in the distributor at all. If I had to venture a guess I'd say no
more than 2mm at absolute maximum, but I seem to remember it being much less
than that - even with 90k miles on the motor.
