1946 Dakota Project

OK, guys and gals, I've been in the lurk mode as instructed quite a
while ago. Looking for a concise history of the Dakota. interested
primarily in wheelbase and track width changes. Also would appreciate
the year changes such as engine sizes, engine management
(Carb/TBFI/MPFI) transmission management via computer, etc. The
project, as stated in the subject line is putting a restored 1946 Dodge
WD-15 pickup on a relatively modern chassis. Your constructive comments
and/or recommendations will be much appreciated.

As a starting point, my pickup has a 120" wheelbase, the bed and fenders
bolt together, so that "losing" a few inches between the cab and the
rear fenders would be easy. I've seen photo albums on the web showing a
couple of similar projects, but no writings to explain or amplify what
the pics show. What I _think_ I have learned is that the short
wheelbase Dak's are 114" and the long ones are 124". Thus, I'd like to
find a standard cab, short bed; since I would much rather shorten my
existing pickup bed than section a Dakota frame and have to reinforce it
and redo brakelines driveshaft, etc, etc.

Again, any helpful comments much appreciated!

Thanks.
