Usually pumps do just that. Fail without warning. Considering the
nature of a fuel pump... you typically will only see it work - or not
work. In your case you did have one of those weird ones. Your pump was
still kicking in - but at a much lower pressure. Like you said it just
wore out.

How did you work the bed removal? Did your tank straps look nasty? Was
the inside of the tank clean?
