Got the head off the Neon

I may have lucked out... The #2 and #4 pistons seem to be the only two
that hit the intake valves. And very slightly at that. I forgot to
circle the dimples on cyl4.jpg - but if you look carefully you can see.
Aside from being dirty (which does concern me) the pistons look none
the worse for wear after this incident. The timing belt must not have
slipped all that much because if it had... the valves would have been in
peices. As it is - I can't see any obvious signs of damage to the
valves themselves. But I'm willing to bet they are bent - at least
slightly.

There (links below) you can see the cause of all this - the tensioner
with the nail still locking the pin in place. No tension on the belt
caused the teeth on the belt to jump, throwing off the timing, causing
the pistons to kiss the valves, busting the rocker shaft and hammering
the bolts out of the holes.

Yippy...

I located a head off the engine of a wrecked 2000 Neon with 61K - for
$170 bucks. I'm picking it up tomarrow, along with the supplies I need
(new timing belt, head gasket, head bolts, intake and exhaust gaskets,
fresh coolant - etc...

With any luck I'll have it running again by the end of the week.

(sighs)
