Here ya go - this should help. It sounds like the three bolts you
removed were for the wheel bearing unit. You can put those back in -
you don't need to remove the bearing hub for this.
As you can see - the CV axle bolts to the flange that is on the
differential center section (pumpkin). There are six bolts around that
flange that you need to remove. After those are out - the end of the CV
axle will come down and you can pull the axle out. The axle end is just
splined into the wheel bearing unit. After you have the spindle nut off
- there is nothing preventing you from removing the axle shaft.
As I said before - be careful when pulling the axle. Grab it at both
ends when you are removing it and do not let it extend or hang down.
Once the axle is out you should have plenty of room to get the ball
joints out.
