the only reason that could happen is with a bad battery that isn't
taking a charge, or a charging system that's putting out *just*
enough to run the vehicle without having any extra to charge the
battery.

I'll jump a vehicle that's been flat dead for a week and as long as
it'll idle on its own in 5 minutes, I'd not hesitate to drive cross
country in it (as long as it has an volt meter so I know it's
charging). if it won't idle on it's own in 5-10, then the battery
likely needs reconditioning.

Too bad I'm not closer, if you guys are junking batteries that
quickly I'd love to peruse them. My intrepid needs a battery, it's
flat dead and needs a jump start no matter how long it runs for or
how quickly you try to restart it. runs strong once it's fired up
though. I'm sure if you're replacing batteries at the drop of that
particular hat there are plenty sent for recycling that would be
perfectly serviceable after a nice trickle charge, and many more that
could do with a desulfication and put in a few more good years of
service.
