Dodge used to have a really neat Tow Capacity calculator. I can't seem
to find it now.
Looking at the 2006 Trailer Life Towing Guide (abbreviated version is
on-line at
http://www.trailerlife.com/downloads/2005/TowingRatings_p12_15.pdf )
Here's what I find:
Dodge 1500 QC 4X4 5.7 7550 lbs w/3.55 axle and 8500 lbs w/3.92 axle
1500 RC 4X2 4.7 6650 lbs w/3.55 axle and 7650 lbs w/3.92 axle
Subtract 1000 lbs from the 3.92 ratings if you opt for 20" wheels.
Also, manual transmission (available on 4.7 only) drops tow capacity
dramatically.
Between 20's and the different rear ends, it's certainly possible for
the 4.7 and 5.7 to have comparable tow ratings. Just make sure you're
comparing apples to apples in terms of wheels, rear-ends, and body styles.
