Tire Chains

Hi Gang,

I'm looking for tire chains at the moment and decided it might be a good idea
to check the owners manual. According to it, I shouldn't be using chains at
all?? I have a 2000 Dakota CC 4x4 with the 31x10.5x15 tires.

I actually already have a set of cable chains for "just in case" driving
through areas that occasionally have some snow. I'm about to go on an offroad
trip where there might be some snowy areas and want to be as prepared as
possible. As a result, I'm looking for the gnarliest chains I can possibly get
my hands on.

Anyway, in looking at the owners manual, I find this statement:

"Do not install tire chains or traction devices on front wheels of 4x4 models
with tires larger than P215/75R15. Do not install tire chains or traction
devices on rear wheels of 4x4 models with tires larger than P235/75R15. These
tires are too large for sufficient body clearance with chains or other traction
devices."

I find that to be pretty hard to believe. When I test fitted my cable chains,
there was plenty of clearance around all body and suspension components. I
have a hard time believing that conventional chains would be much different --
at least in terms of the rear. On the front might be another story.

Any thoughts? Anyone successfully put chains on at least the rear of a GenIII
4x4 with 31s? Any problems?

Thanks,

-Bill
