Well, this is just the official propaganda site, but according to
http://www.e85fuel.com/information/daimler_chrysler.php Dakotas are not
compatible. I'm not sure exactly what the difference is, but I seem to
remember reading once that it has something to do with the materials used in
the fuel system (E85 has a tendency to eat the regular stuff).
It says that *fleet* Durangos and Rams with the 4.7 are compatible, so it
probably isn't too difficult to do the conversion. However, Googling for "E85
conversion" just turns up a bunch of pages telling me it's possible but not
legal. Best info: http://www.e85fuel.com/e85101/faqs/conversion.php. I guess
it depends on how important that sort of thing is for any emissions testing
programs in your area.
As for real-world experience, I can't help you there. Since Dakotas don't
like the stuff, I've never tried it or even seen it. I have run E10 with no
problems. The owner's manual specifically says E10 is fine (I checked). I
remember it being considerably cheaper in Iowa, presumably due to government
subsidies. Sunoco around my area sells almost exclusively E10.
Personally, I like the idea of ethanol or other biofuels. They may not
generate quite as much power on the dyno, but I think the engines could be
adapted to work better with these fuels if a determined effort was made.
Here's the thing that sticks out in my mind: oil comes from Iraq, corn comes
from Iowa. Who would you rather buy from?
