=20 We left Denver today on our way to Estes Park, and decided to
drive as clos= e to Dakota Hill as we could. We took the Peak to Peak
scenic byway north = out of Black Hawk (119) and turned off on CR15-S
(at N39deg 50.075' W105deg= 30.979). It's a decent dirt road, passable
by cars. It's kind of hard to= find that turn, but it's right past
Missouri Creek. A little way down tha= t road, there's a fork. You
have to take the right fork- the left takes yo= u to Pickle Gulch.
We were pulling the camper, so we couldn't = make the top due to the
next road. At N39deg 52.574' W105deg 31.727 there'= s a left turn it
looks like you have to take. This road is not maintained = well, but I
walked up it a little ways and it looks like it's accessible to= 2WD
high clearance vehicles, at least as far as I could see. There are a =
few ruts, some small boulders, etc. but not too bad. I'm an off-road
wuss,= and I would have driven it gladly if I didn't have the camper.
On the cou= rse I plotted, based on where the mapping software says
Dakota Hill is (n39= deg 52.150' W105deg 33.217'), it should only be
another 2.5 miles.
<= br />I also found a fun road leading up Saxon Mountain out of
Georgetown, b= ut I turned back on that road - it was very rough,
consisting of probably 6= inch boulders largely, and since my stock
2005 QC 4x4 has the ground clear= ance of a Pontiac Sunfire, I didn't
want to break my only way home. For th= ose wanting to travel from
Como (near Jefferson) to Breckenridge, there's a= scenic dirt road
called Boreas Pass that we took. It's also passable by a= ny car, but
there a a few technical roads coming off of it.
