I wasn't trying to make the claim that MBTE is any good. To say that soot
isn't harmful is ridiculous. Soot does fall to the ground but it also
circulates in the air like all small particles and people breathe it in.
Soot also gets into groundwater like MBTE does. Soot contains harmful
chemicals. Soot is what makes acid rain and smog.

Lung Cancer Stats:
US Lung Cancer deaths - 160,000
http://www.cancer.org/docroot/STT/content/STT_1x_Cancer_Facts__Figures_2007.asp
Europe Lung Cancer Deaths - 444,000 http://www.cancercode.org/table3.htm
1 out of 1,639 people in europe die from lung cancer.
1 out of 1,881 people in USA die from lung cancer.
More people die in Europe from lung cancer, but it's hardly relevant to
this arguement because lung cancer is primarily cause by tabacco smoke.
