I see the optimas as being worth the extra money. I've studied
battery designs alot and even posted a big write up about them on the
DML a while back. The larger the cranking amps on a battery, with a
given size shell, the less fluid within the battery. This is because
they have to use thicker and larger plates inside the battery to make
the power to get the higher ratings. The optima was designed with
extra power in mind and the gel used in them was designed to stay
packed around the plate coils and never evaporate like the liquid
within standard batteries.
Optimas are tough batteries. Can they put out more power than a
standard wet cell? Depends on the size of the wet cell battery. Over
the long run the optima will provide you with better performance.
Even after all my studies in battery construction and design along
with testing of several kinds, I still pay the extra and have optimas
in all my vehicles. My dakota has the yellow top for the stereo use,
my 4x4 has two yellow tops and my wife's jeep has a red top. I will
never again buy another standard design wet cell battery. I'm an
optima convert for life.
