It can be heard in the upper end of the engine with a stethoscope.
The further away from the heads the quieter it gets till it disappears in
the accessories, exhaust pipes below the manifolds, etc... It is heard with
the same loudness in the heads, the rockers and the exhaust manifolds. But
to listen in a general sense it just sounds like the middle of the engine is
tapping and you can't say if it is from one side or the other, just the
middle of the engine.
