If the pressure is too high, the high pressure switch will turn off the
compressor. However, if the system is plugged before the switch, the
pressure relief valve on the compressor will open.

Actually,I don't think the head pressure could get too
high unless the high pressure cutout switch was bad.
Happening only on hot days does sound like too much
pressure for whatever reason.
