FSM tells you to take everything off. Leave the Alternator and A/C
Compressor attached - just disconnect the electrical connections and move
the entire bracket to the passenger fender.

I've done the water pump on my '93 twice and my '96 once. Some water pumps
have a pressed on pulley which is what you seem to have. Did your new pump
come with a pulley? If not, you need one and I don't think your pressed on
pulley will come off and bolt onto it. Maybe I'm wrong.
Since you have a pressed in pulley, you can stick a couple bolts onto the
holes, leaving them sticking out a bit will allow you to put a screwdriver
between them for leverage. Then put a large wrench on the fan bolt. If you
have someone nearby, have them hold the pulley still with the screwdriver
while you give the wrench a good whack with a hammer. Also, auto parts
stores rent for free a kit for this. Couple more tips:

Keep the belt on to aid in pulley turning prevention.
Defiantly replace the bypass hose while you have everything torn down.
Possibly a thermostat, upper/lower hose too.
I forget what the FSM says but the accessory bracket unbolts and moves
enough without having to remove anything from it (alt, compressor, etc.)

Hope this helps.

ok DMLers. I am determined to tackle my water pump myself. :)

I ordered my parts from RockAuto.com. Got the water pump for about $37 and
a gasket.
Plus while I am there I decided to replaced the idler puller with a Gates
pulley cause
that pulley seems to squeal a bit. And I will replace the tensioner pulley
because its
been there for 13 years.

My question is this:

In Section 7, page 15 of 1994 Dakota FSM we have this:

"Use a 36mm fan wrench to turn fan mounting nut _CounterClockwise_ as viewed
from the front......"

and right after that sentence we have this:

"... place a bar or screwdriver between water pump pulley bolts to prevent
pulley from
rotating."

Problem: I don't have any water pump pulley bolts. Apparently there are
supposed to be
4 of them. But all I have on the face of water pump pulley is 4 empty
holes. ( huh? )
Yep. 4 holes.

Do I need to get a special wrench now to hold the pulley in place?
If I do need a special tool, can someone please post a link to it?
thanks!!!
