Well just an update - last week we got the truck up on jackstands in the
parking lot at work and I pulled the rear diff cover. fluid looked good -
gears looked good. I reached over to spin the rear passenger wheel to look at
the gears better, heard grinding noise - but it was not coming from the diff.
Spun the drivers side - no noise at all. Okaaay... something in the drum let
loose I bet. Springs or hold down nails perhaps. Boss takes over and I go in
to work. He throws gear lube in and bolts the cover back on.

He calls me out and motions for me to come take a look... the brakes are fine!
A rusty edge on the lip of the drum had broken off and was churning up inside
the drum. Because of the backing plate - it couldnt drop out. So these chunks
of metal were all that it was! heh
