For the A-body & E-body ball joints, I have many times use a regular
craftsman gear puller.

Just use 2 arms & a hose clamp to keep it
from popping off. I don't tighten the puller particularly hard.
Once it's loaded up as much as you are comfortable with, hit the eye
(where the ball joint stud goes into) with a hammer. I actually
put an old socket extension on it and hit that, since it's an
easier target.
