Correct....TPS, MAP, Line Pressure, etc., all come into play on the shift
pattern.

I think it does affect it. The PCM makes it shift
depending on sensed load,among other things (like
speed). Without the PCM being able to detect these
things properly,it will shift and lockup at the wrong
times.
