Uh, please clarify, how does a customer buy something that no one makes?

I don't think it can be narrowed down to just one aspect. For any good
or service, you need somebody willing to pay for it and somebody capable of
providing it. Customers wiling to purchase a product which nobody makes
will generate no profit, just as a manufacturer building a product which
nobody wants will generate no profit. IMHO, its best to look at it as an
entire system as opposed to crediting one particular part with the success
of the whole.
