I went ahead and checked the fluid.

Color is ok (red), no bubbles, no burn smell. Level is kind of hard to read,
but I dont think its low. Theres fluid all over the bottom of the stick when I
pull it out. I checked it in neutral idling hot. I think the truck had its
first fluid change at 38k miles, it was flushed. I know its a little late in
terms of maintenance but...

Could it be a mis-adjusted band or something?
