Yes the pick up coil in the distrib monitors camshaft rotation and
engine timing... but, you walk into my parts store and I'll go out on a
limb here and say "the majority of" parts houses... and the terms "pick
up coil" and "camshaft sensor" are not interchangeable :)

A newbie will flip through the computer listings and say "we dont have a
camsahft sensor for a 1989 dodge dakota" - - a guy who knows what hes
talking about will sell you a pick up coil.
