The GM-Chrysler merger won't happen without the $5 billion GM is asking for
from the government to help finance it. So far the government is saying
no... they don't want to see the large layoffs that would result from the
merger.
They would rather see smaller layoffs from both companies... :-|

No choice. GM already has too much overlap in their product lines,
absorbing everything Chrysler makes and keeping them on the market
just dilutes things further.
Minivans, there's no overlap. Jeep and full-size pickups have a very
faithful following, so they're easier to justify keeping them around.
The Wrangler especially - loyal buyers & no overlap w/ a GM model.
