Matt!! I own an old '89 LWB 2wd that has some 300,000+
miles on it. It is and has always been absolutely gutless.. I do
not think headers will do even a little bit of good on that set up.
My personal opinion is to go for the later model Magnum or
consider a V8 swap.. I also own a '95 ext cab 2wd V8 that has
almost 300,000 miles on it and I love the power it has and it
gets decent mileage IMHO(15-17 town and 18-20 highway).
I'd love to have my '95 drivetrain in the '89. and I'm seriously
considering doing just that..
