Front and Rear Seal

I need to replace the front and rear seal in my '96 4X4 Dakota. Any tips?
I know the rear seal will be a pain. A local shop said the front would be
$300-$400 and they wouldn't even touch the rear in a '96 4x4. They have a
tranny shop down the street do it.
So any tips, advise, hints and/or suggestions will greatly appreciated!
