Well initial test drive was ok , took truck to hockey about 10 miles
each way, with highway portion. Started out fine but was shifting hard
on the way home.

My current working theory is that the mystery cylinder was/is a roller
element from the front bearing on the input shaft. This seems to
explain the symptoms, no noise in gear, release clutch and hard
shifting.

With clutch engaged, there is the additional support for the shaft from
clutch and to a lesser extent the pilot, everything is hunky dory.
With clutch released, the support from the clutch is lost and shifting
becomes difficult.
