Fuel gauge drops to 0, then recovers next day

Argh! Just started happening, and it took 2 or 3 times before I figured it out, that sometimes, my fuel gauge drops to 0 and the warning light comes on and dings once, like I'm out of gas. Couple of minutes later, or a day later, it comes back to life.

In the middle of this, I discovered how the '98 family is built: You take a heater core, and build the truck around it. Finally had to have the core replaced, it was leaking so much the windows would fog up even in daytime. So the dash came out, and then back in. Fuel gauge problem stayed, so I don't think it's a inside problem.

140,000 miles, still factory fuel pump, (seldom allow below 1/4tank) Any guess where I should start looking ? Fuel tank area? Underhood somewhere ?

Merry Christmas ya'll.

Mike
