I believe in the third gen Dakotas the v6 got the 42RE, 5.2s got the
44RE and the 5.9s got the 46RE. I can't speak to 2nd gen Dakotas. In
the Rams, all v8s were backed with the 46.

Let me see if my 98 FSM can confirm....

no.

My Haynes manuals have the following to say:
98-99 Durango/97-99 Dakota
"The models covered by this manual use either a 42RE (four cylinder
engine) 44RE (v6 engine) or 46RE (v8 engine) four speed transmission
with an electronic governor. They are all similar in design and
function."

and for the record my '94-'98 Ram manual has this to offer (and I've
never heard the 3* designations):
"1994 models are equipped with a 32RH, 36RH or 37RH three speed
transmissions. The 32RH is used with 3.9L and 5.2L engines, the 36RH
is used for the heavy-duty 5.2L and 5.9L engines; the 37RH is used
with the V10 and with the Cummins Turbo Diesel. 1995 models are
equipped with a 42RH, 46RH or 47RH four speed transmission. The 42RH
is used with 3.9L engines in 4x2 1500 models; the 46RH is used with
the 3.9L, 5.2L and 5.9L engines and the 47RH is used with V10 and
Cummins Turbo Diesel applications."

Well it appears I was wrong. Neat ;-D

Mike
told you not to listen
