Just a datapoint: I just bought my truck new and got the dealer down
from $980 to $690 on the 7/75 warrantee. I tried to get him even lower
and he wouldn't budge; he claimed that was his cost. I can't swear he
was telling the truth, but there you go.

As for buying it after the fact, I know the longer you wait, the more it
costs, but I don't know the exact breakdown.
