DML Member Registry (WWW)

  Hello all,

Sorry I haven't had a lot of time lately to contribute to the list, but it
looks like its doing just fine on its own! :)

Anyway, I put together that template for the WWW page registry today.
I'd like to post it here first though, and get any questions, comments,
or potential problems sorted out. One such question is wether anyone
would prefer to input this info via the WWW (as a form on the page) than the
standard "cut and paste" method. Either way, anyone will still be
able to use the "cut and paste" method, but if there is enough interest,
I'll create a form for this stuff. (I didn't want to create a form
right away just in case the format here changes a lot before its final
version.)

Well, thats enough out of me. What do you think?

  Thanks!

                                              -Jon-

The Dakota Mailing List Member Registry template (with descriptions)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This file consists of two sections, the first being the template itself,
and the second being a description of the template fields. The registry
can be viewed via the Dakota Mailing List Home Page at:

    http://www.cs.fredonia.edu/~stei0302/www/dakota/dakota.html

The process of getting your info into the registry is as follows:

   1) Cut the template out of this file and fill it out.

   2) Send the template to me, along with any pictures, sounds, or videos
you'd like to have included. How? Via e-mail or FTP.

      a) E-Mail: mail the completed template to stei0302@cs.fredonia.edu,
along with your pictures, sounds, or videos. (In order to send
these binaries via e-mail, you must first uuencode or binhex (for
you Mac people) them, to convert them into ASCII.
Alternatively, if your e-mail program supports it, you can use
its "include" or "attach" feature. If you cannot send binaries
via e-mail, you'll have to go the FTP route. (see part 2b)

      b) FTP: Connect to csclub0.cs.fredonia.edu. Change to the
         /pub/incoming/mailing-lists/dakota directory. Create a new
directory there ( mkdir <new directory name> ). Put your template
and any pictures, sounds, or videos in the new directory that you
just created. It is nescessary for you to create your own
directory or you may overwrite the template and binaries of others.

      c) If you can't send the binaries to me via e-mail or FTP, e-mail
me and I'll grab them from a public site via FTP or the WWW (if
possible), or you can snail-mail them to me on disk(s).

    3) Remit the $0.00 registry fee. (Foreign orders add an additional $0.00
to cover shipping and handling. Please allow 14 business days for
US currency to clear. Sorry, no credit cards or COD's accepted.
Prices and details subject to consistency. Not valid with any other
       offer. See store for details.)

itself can be found above. This file (template.txt) is available via ftp at
csclub0.cs.fredonia.edu. Look in the /pub/mailing-lists/dakota/registry/
directory.

Note: Throughout this section, I will occasionally refer to a "text block".
This is simply a block of text where you convey information to the reader
however you like. There is no strict format for this. (Please keep it clean;
this is a family show.) ;)

Owner Info:
Name: [optional, your name or anonymous]
E-Mail: [optional, your address, N/A, or anonymous]

Performance: [ use "unknown" if you don't know. If you're estimating any
of these numbers, please indicate as such. Those of you in
metric countries can substitute the appropriate units and
tests if you prefer. (ex: kph for mph, 0-100 for 0-60, etc) ]
    Horsepower:
    Torque:
    0-60:
    1/4 mi:
    Top Speed:
    Skidpad:

    Description: [of the picture, optional]
      .
. [add another "Name" and "Description" for each additional picture]
      .
Sounds: [AU, VOC, WAV, etc.**] [ no info is entered on this line ]

      .
Videos: [AVI, MOV, MPEG, etc.**] [ no info is entered on this line ]
    Name: [of the video (filename***)]
    Description: [of the video, optional]
      .
. [add another "Name" and "Description" for each additional video]
      .

* I'm sorry, I don't know why I said that. :) No info is entered on that line.

** I may have to convert any seldom used formats to more popular ones (or
simply make other formats available), due to the spread of Internet users
across the many different platforms and operating systems.
When sending pictures, the preferred format is GIF. (Followed by JPEG)
When sending sounds, the preferred format is WAV. (Followed by AU or VOC)
When sending videos, the preferred format is MPEG. (Followed by AVI or MOV)

*** I may have to rename these files in order to avoid conflicts with other
files, or if I decide to set up a standard naming convention. Mainly,
this field will help me to match the pictures, sounds and videos you send
to the proper template. (And may be used as hypertext links to the
    actual binaries.)
