Generally, this type of deal is caused by a dirty Oxygen sensor.
I replace O2 sensors every 30-40K and it does help. Carbed engines are
worse in that they gum up the sensor.
What happens is that the O2 sensor keeps reading lean and the system keeps
dumping in fuel This extra fuel is easily a cause of trouble under heavy
loads like you were getting.
