Mary,
Check the local junk yards for an SMEC. I know that the 2.2 engine
controllers can be had for $25 - $75 here on the east coast.
I think your idea of trying someone elses is a good but in the interest of
protecting the other persons SMEC put your suspect one in there truck and
see if the problem follows it. That way if by some remote chance there is
something in the system of your truck damaging the SMEC you are not likely
to blow theirs.
