In a bold display of support for aftermarket parts
manufacturers and vehicle converters, Chrysler
Corporation announced it will make available an
"Aftermarket OBD-II Testing Kit" to facilitate
product development for '97-and-later Chrysler cars
and trucks. The announcement came at the annual
SEMA/OEM Tech Talks meeting in Detroit.
"This willingness to work with the aftermarket is
the first time that a vehicle manufacterer has
offered to make critically needed information
available so that aftermarket manufacturers can
develop their products confident that they will be
compatible with the OBD-II system as well as
applicable emission regulations.," said Frank
Bohanan, SEMA director, technical affairs.
The proposed kit includes several distinct
components: an enhanced scan tool, test guide, and
900-number FAX line.
According to Bohanon, "Chrysler has taken a very
significant step in resolving the issue of
aftermarket access to OBD-II-related information.
Clearly this will help the aftermarket learn what
it needs to know to develop successful products for
OBD-II-equipped vehilces. Chrysler's willingness to
split from the crowd and propose not only the
initial test but ongoing support for it is truly
exceptional." (from SEMA news)
