I recently had a problem with my 91 Dakota with a 3.9 Litre engine. The
engine would backfire while shifting under hard acceleration. It would also
back fire while parked and reving the engine. I tried a ethanol based fuel
in the truck and the back firing subsided some. The end result of this was
I replaced the EGR Valve and the problem was corrected. The EGR valve was
shot but the vacuum side of it was not leaking. It looks like the gasket
between it and the intake manifold was leaking and that probably caused the
problem.
