Re: Auto tranny problem -Reply

Michael,

The 1st time I ever changed auto-tanny fluid/filter was just a few weeks
ago on my 92 Dak V-8. It took me 3 hours, a half a bag of kitty litter and a
lot of patience, and I was not able to adjust the kick-down band (socket
would not slip over the nut--too little clearance).

The worst problem (after loosening all the bolts so the fluid could drip out
of one side), was the exhaust pipe from the left manifold covered the
front row of bolts AND got in the way of removing the pan after taking
out the bolts. Afterwards, my service guy told me that the dealer
loosens a clamp on the pipe that allows it to be moved a few inches.
Getting the pan off and on w/o moving the pipe was VERY difficult, but I
did it.

Filter change was mindless. The gasket was a pain, only because of the
difficulty of getting the pan back in place. However, I "glued" it down
with a little RTV blue, and that helped a bit.

I filled up with Mobil 1 Syn. ATF and can feel a little difference in shifts. I
paid $5 qt. at Chiefs. I did have difficulty finding syn. ATF and consider
the price I paid a little high.

IF I do it again, I'll definately install a drain, probably using plumbing joints
or simply cold-welding a bolt inside the pan, and loosen the exhaust.

Next, I going to try momma's Ram Wagon. It looks MUCH easier (exhaust
exits on the left!).

My 2 cents...
