As Phil McClay says, " go ahead and drive in 4wd."
Although there is indeed a small fuel economy issue, you
are not damaging any part of the drive line by doing so.
The only concern to remember is that the Dakota uses a
Transfer Case and not a Center Differential or Viscous
Coupling between the axles. This will cause the axles to
bind during turns on dry pavement, and cause some really
neat tire wear patterns.
In most cases, binding is not an issue on relatively straight
Interstate Highways.
