---------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome!
You have been subscribed to the Dakota mailing list!
The purpose of this mailing list:
To provide a forum of discussion for all aspects of Dodge's Dakota
truck. Related items would be well within the charter as well.
(i.e. Magnum engines, Dodge ABS, etc.) Basically, anything even
remotely related to the Dodge Dakota.
This list isn't censored or moderated as such, but if someone
presents themself as a problem, they will be banned for the greater
good of the list. People whos posts are obseen, vulgar, etc. fall
into this category, as do people who spew worthless nonsense and
seriously degrade the signal:noise ratio. The posting of binary
files is also forbidden. Many people who are subscribed to the
list can't handle files of this size, and this causes many problems
for them. If you'd like to send a picture, WAV file, video, etc. of
your truck, please upload it to the FTP site, or e-mail it to
steiger@ait.fredonia.edu if you don't have FTP capabilities.
(If you do, FTP is preferred.) I'll put it on the FTP site and on
the Web page.
The owner and administrator of the Dakota mailing list is Jon Steiger,
(steiger@ait.fredonia.edu), proud owner of a black '96 318ci SLT 5-speed.
Please feel free to post an introductory message with any personal
information, experience, or comments you may have. If you wish, you can
upload pictures, sounds, videos, etc. of your (or someone elses!) Dakota
to the ftp site. (Details in /pub/mailing-lists/dakota/pictures/INDEX)
If you send a message to listserv@ait.fredonia.edu with a body of:
help dakota
You will be mailed a file with the commands the mailing list software
will recognize (including how to unsubscribe)
PLEASE NOTE:
A message which is posted to the mailing list will have the return
address of the list. If you reply to the message, your message will
go the entire list. Normally, this is the desired effect, but if you
wish to send a private reply to the sender alone, you will have to
change to "To:" field when replying.
VERY IMPORTANT:
When sending a message to the list, you can't have any of the following
words
at the beginning of the "Subject:" line or the first line of the body:
subscribe, unsubscribe, join, leave, digest, dir, put, get.
If you do, you will be sent a help message because the list software thinks
that you are trying to send an administrative command to the general list.
Your original e-mail message will be lost.
IMPORTANT: If your e-mail address starts bouncing messages back to the
list, you will be unsubscribed! If you were experiencing
temporary problems, just re-subscribe.
Thanks again for subscribing! Enjoy!!

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's some info about commands and stuff:
Note: When sending commands to listserv@ait.fredonia.edu,
no subject is nescessary, and the command should be placed
in the body of the message. In my examples below, I
enclose the command in quotes to differentiate it from
the explanatory text, but they are not a part of the command,
and you should not put the quotes in the body of the message.
Sending mail to the list
========================
To send a message to all dakota list members, send an
e-mail message to dakota@ait.fredonia.edu.
Leaving the list
================
To stop receiving messages from dakota you will need to send
a message to listserv@ait.fredonia.edu. A subject is not
needed, but in the body of the message write, "leave dakota".
If you receive a message saying you are not a member but you are still
getting messages, you could be subscribed as a different email address.
In one of the errant messages, check for the "X-ListMember:" clause in
the header of the message. It will have the form:
X-listMember: user@machine.domain.com [dakota@ait.fredonia.edu]
which means that this message was from the list called "dakota"
and sent to the email address "user@machine.domain.com". You can
now leave the list by sending a message to listserv@ait.fredonia.edu
with no subject and a body of: "leave dakota user@machine.domain.com".
Requesting digests
==================
Instead of getting each message from the list seperately, you may ask
the list server to send you a compendium of all the messages that were
sent that day. To do this, send a message to listserv@ait.fredonia.edu
with a body of "digest dakota".
The list manager will send you a confirmation message back and every
24-hours you will receive a single email message with a contents
and each message listed in it.
Finding out who is on the list
==============================
To receive a list of subscribers, send a message to
listserv@ait.fredonia.edu. The body can be one of
three things:
list dakota
(unsorted)
list dakota ALPHA
(sorted alphabetically by e-mail address)
list dakota DOMAIN
(sorted alphabetically by domain)
Requesting Files
================
This list has a set of files associated with it. These files may
contain new software releases, frequently asked questions etc. The
list server provides two commands to allow you to collect these files:
DIR and GET. If you wish to obtain a list of all the files associated
with this list, send a message to listserv@ait.fredonia.edu with a
body of "dir dakota".
In return, you will get two messages. One is a transaction
report (telling you the command was completed) and the second will be
titled "Directory for dakota" and would have a contents like:
--------------------------------------------------------------
Directory for the list dakota
1 EXAMPLE.ZIP 2535788 bytes
2 EXAMPLE2.ZIP 2671264 bytes
Directory for dakota has 2 entries.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Now you know the names of the files, you can request one to be sent
to you using the GET command. Taking the example of EXAMPLE.ZIP,
we could use the command "get dakota example.zip"
Again, you will get two messages - the transaction report and a
message containing the MIME encoded file (or the file if it is a text
file).
Where to report problems
========================
Should you still have any problems or questions, please email
steiger@ait.fredonia.edu who will be happy to help.
