Well, for me, there's two options.
1) Buy a can of foaming engine degreaser. Take the truck to a coin-op
car wash. Spray down the motor after covering dist. cap, SBEC,
battery, throttle postition sensor, blah, blah, blah.
2) Any good detail shop should do engine steam cleaning. My local
shop charges like $30. Ya know how clean engines look on a used car
lot? This is how they get 'em lookin' so good. For me this is
definitely worth not dealing with all the frustration of the above
choice.
I'll probably get my engine done is a couple of weeks when I'm sure
the bad weather is finally over. Gonna have 'em do a complete detail
on the wife's Blazer as well. They'll do top to bottom, inside and
out, and engine steam clean for about $130. They even clean inside
the dash vents with a toothbrush and Q-tips.

Speaking of which... What is a good way to clean the engine?
I get all that wonderful road salt up here too, and my engine is
looking pretty nasty. I've also got some oil on it, from oil changes
where I spilled a little and never really got all of it wiped off.
Then there's the dust and dirt, etc... Yuk.
