You sure can!! Let me tell ya what I did. Get yourself an Edelbrock
10" Signature Series chrome air cleaner (Edelbrock p/n 1208). Check
in Summit Racing or Jeg's. Should be about $18.
Then ya need a K&N 10" diameter filter (you could use the paper one
that comes with the air cleaner but you won't get the performance
increase that a K&N will give you). I used p/n e-1080 which is a
stock replacement for a Jeep Wrangler. It's 2.25" high. At this
height you've got more surface area than the stock panel filter. I
got mine from Jeg's for about $29.
The K&N's diameter is slightly bigger than the Edelbrock so ya got to
squeeze it in there. The whole assembly is a bit taller than the
stock setup so you'll need to either modify the stock bolt/bracket
assm. or the better choice would be to use a bent piece of 1/4"
threaded rod. It's a 7/8" offset.
This combo gave a noticeable improvement in performance. Better
mileage too. So long as you don't mind the sound of secondaries
openin' on a carb you'll love this mod.

On the 97 Dakota there is a little airboot coming off the center of the
engine. On the other side of the air boot is a box with the air cleaner.
Anyone know if i can just remove that whole set up and get a regular air
filter to fit on top of that. Preferrably a chrome one with the air
cleaner on the out side.????????
Thanks
