I guess that the new and older 4 WD shifters do it a little differently,
but in my '92 there's a little vacuum motor on the front axle that
shuttles an internally splined piece to connect and disconnect the right
front wheel from the front differential. The left front wheel drives the
differential when 4 WD is disengaged. It works fine, and you don't have
to mess with hubs.
