I was able to aquire this information from the Gear and Axle plant
in Detroit....Since my wife has worked there 31 years.

It concerns all Dakotas with the 8 1/4 Rear Axle Assembly (ring gear size).

The 1987 and 1988 Dakotas used a Power-Loc from Auburn Gear.
The Factory Part Number is 3723690.

The 1989 thru 1993 Dakotas used a Power-Loc from Auburn Gear with RWAL.
(Rear Wheel Anti-Loc Brakes) Can not be used in the '87 and '88.
The Factory Part Number is 4384285.

The 1994 thru 1996 Dakotas used a Dana Unit with Net Formed Gears and
a 27 spline axle shaft. The terminology changed from Power-Loc to
Track-Lock. There was also a Yoke change.
The Factory Part Number is 52068451.

The 1997 Dakota uses a Dana Unit with Face Haob Gear Sets and a 29
spline axle shaft. It is also called a Track-Lock. It is not
interchangeable
with the 1994 thru 1996. This is also RWAL.
(Also, the 3.90 ration change to 3.92)
The Factory Part Number is 52098778.

The new Drango will use an Aluminum carrier instead of the cast steel.
The 1998 Dakota and Drango will use both 8 1/4 and 9 /14 Axles.
My guess is the 9 1/4 axle will be used with the Heavy Duty Towing
package and the upcoming R/T 5-Speed (late availability).

The Sure-Grip terminology has not been used for some time.

If anyone needs additional information from the Gear and Axle plant
let me know. I'll nose around to see what I can discover.
