Every head unit can be different. Almost ALL pre-amp outs are volume
controlled. They will be balance controlled as well. Seldom can you find
one that is not. But unless you have 4 outputs (2 right and two left), the
fader will not affect the output in any way. If you have 6 outputs (3
right, 3 left) then you most likely have a fader controlled front, rear,
and one set that will not be affected by the fader for the sub-woofer amp.
Sometimes the outputs can be switched to an INPUT via a switch on the head
unit. Be sure to read the directions.
If you are hooking up a sub amp to the only outputs and plan to run the
primary speakers on the head unit built in amp, then be sure to purchase a
sub amp with built-in crossovers and gain control so you can set the
balance of mids to woofer ratio. But note that your primary speakers will
still be running full frequency, thus lowering the overall undistorted
sound level of them. But you can purchase cheap passive filters to filter
out everything below 80 hz. This will help.

Subject: general stereo question ( was Re: Subwoofer Update)
Can someone answer a general stero question? If you have a stero with
lineout jacks ( left and right ) and you go to an Amp... does the volume
controls and left/right work using the stero? i.e. is the lineout
constant or variable depending on the volume? I assume that since you only
have a left/right lineout, the front/back fader control on the stereo will
not work. Do you just adjust the AMP to for the fader and not generally
change it? Thanks.
