Many trailer lighting problems result from a bad ground. Many folks try to
ground the trailer through the coupler-to-hitchball contact, but that's not
effective, and can cause the type of unpredictable problems you're having.
Make sure that a ground wire goes from your vehicle to one of the
connections on the female connector, and from the trailer frame to its male
connector. This could very well solve your problem.
