Well I cant just sit by without butting into the conversation. As for gas
milage, I consistently get 17-18 mpg around town in my 97 Dak V-6 4X4
auto/3.92. I'll get 20-21 on the hwy. doing 70 w/ A/C on, but the best
mileage is keeping it to 65 and the A/C off. With that setup I get 23-24.
Hard to believe but true. I did the most comprehensive tests I could to
determine this by filling up with exactly 10 gallons as soon as the low
fuel indicator light popped on; then, reading off exactly how many miles I
went until it popped on again. I realize this doesn't take into account
weather, wind etc but it should be fairly accurate for my purposes. Gss
prices are outrageous in this town ( Santa Barbara, Ca) with 1.51 for 87
being the absolute lowest rock-bottom price found at any station.
As for oil, I've used synthetic for a long time. I used Mobil 1 exclusively
in my 88 Nissan and it gave me 205,000 miles and is still running ( now at
about 220,000 ). It may very well have given that much with regular oil
because I changed at every 4k miles but I cant say for sure. I think the
benefits of synthetic are if you leave it in the crankcase for more than 3k
miles. Synthetics can keep their lubricating properties much longer than
regular oils, occasionally I had to strech the interval to 5-6k miles with
the Nissan, but with the Mobil -1 I diddn't worry.
